The Cheapest Way to Ship a Car

Image
Photo : Virrage Images ( Shutterstock ) Sometimes you need to get a car from one part of the country to another, and driving it yourself isn’t an option. In situations like that, it often makes the most sense to ship your car. As you can imagine, like any other type of shipping or moving services, transporting a vehicle can be costly. That said, here’s what to know about the cheapest way to ship a car. Why would you ship a car? Before jumping into the cost, let’s talk about why you might want to ship a car or other vehicle (a service also known as “auto transport”) in the first place. According to CarTalk’s John Goreham , there are three main reasons why people opt for auto transport over driving cars to their destination themselves: Moving a long distance and bringing vehicles along. Britain to face more strikes after talks between government, trade unions fail to reach breakthrough

Image
An ambulance on emergency call drives past an ambulance workers' strike, outside the NHS London Ambulance Service, in London, on Dec. 21, 2022. HENRY NICHOLLS/Reuters Britain will face more strikes by workers demanding higher pay after meetings between ministers and trade unions on Monday failed to end a wave of stoppages across sectors from health care to transport. More than 10,000 ambulance workers will walk out on Wednesday as planned, the GMB union said in a statement, after talks with health minister Steve Barclay failed to produce a breakthrough. “There was some engagement on pay – but not a concrete offer that could help resolve this dispute and make significant progress,” GMB national secretary Rachel Harrison said. With pay rises failing to keep up with double-digit inflation, which is now around 40-year highs, nurses, ambulance staff and rail workers are among those who have staged walkouts, with teachers also being balloted over action. Teaching unions, who will annou...

You're Using Your Ice Scraper Wrong

Image
Photo : Natalya Chumak ( Shutterstock ) I grew up in upstate New York without a garage, so I consider myself fairly skilled in the art of car de-icing—or so I thought. Ice storms have become more common in Portland since I moved here over a decade ago, and with each storm I get less confident in my ability to liberate my windshield. As it turns out, I wasn’t just out of practice; I was also using my ice scraper wrong. Score the ice before scraping it If you’ve ever tried to scrape a thick layer of hard ice off your windshield, you know that the hardest part is getting under it; until you can get a corner of the scraper blade in between your window and the ice, it’s not going anywhere. This is exactly why most ice scrapers have ridges on one side of the blade. You’re supposed to use them to “score” the surface of the ice. It’s almost like perforating a piece of paper you want to tear cleanly; scoring the surface breaks up the tension, which makes it significantly easier to scra...

What to Do When You’re Blinded by Another Car’s High Beams

Image
Photo : trambler58 ( Shutterstock ) Like everything else in the modern age, car headlights have enjoyed a steady advance in terms of technology and function. Back in the earliest days of cars, headlights used to be called head lamps because that’s what they were—gas-fueled flames inside a glass enclosure. Eventually, car makers migrated to electric headlights, and these have progressed from relatively weak “sealed-beam” lights to today’s LEDs—which are great for lighting up the night in front of your car, but also terrible because they are so bright they can effectively blind oncoming traffic. Combined that with the SUVs and pickup trucks that now sit so high up you need a ladder to get in and out of them, and you have a plague o f super-bright, blinding headlights upon our roads. The problem is exacerbated by drivers who don’t seem to understand the rules around high beams . Progress is going to save us again, because “ smart” headlights are going to hit the market soon t...

CNR-T says it earned $1.42 billion in the three months ended Dec. 31, 2022, up from $1.2 billion in the fourth quarter of 2021.
