Amazon reportedly reviewing unprofitable business units in bid to cut costs

Image
Amazon.com Inc AMZN-Q is reviewing unprofitable business units, including the devices unit, to cut costs, the Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday, citing people familiar with the matter. Shares of the company rose 11 per cent in morning trade. Amazon did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment. As part of the months-long review, Amazon has told employees in some unprofitable divisions to look for jobs elsewhere in the company because the teams they were working on were being suspended or closed, the report said. Alexa, Amazon’s voice assistant business, is also under review, the Journal reported, adding that the unit had an operating loss of more than $5-billion a year. https://www.tausiinsider.com/amazon-reportedly-reviewing-unprofitable-business-units-in-bid-to-cut-costs/?feed_id=443268&_unique_id=649f39059fcb3

Amazon reportedly plans to lay off 10,000 people in corporate, technology jobs starting this week

Image
Amazon.com Inc AMZN-Q is planning to lay off about 10,000 people in corporate and technology jobs starting as soon as this week, the New York Times reported on Monday, citing people with knowledge of the matter. The cuts will focus on the e-commerce giant’s devices unit, which houses voice-assistant Alexa, as well as its retail division and human resources, according to the report, which also said the total number of layoffs remains fluid. The company did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment. As of Dec. 31 last year, Amazon had about 1,608,000 full-time and part-time employees. Amazon joins a bandwagon of U.S. companies making deep cuts to its employee base to brace for a potential economic downturn. Last week, Facebook-parent Meta Platforms said it would cut more than 11,000 jobs, or 13 per cent of its workforce, to rein in costs. https://www.tausiinsider.com/amazon-reportedly-plans-to-lay-off-10000-people-in-corporate-technology-jobs-starting-this-week/?fee...

HSBC to shed at least 200 senior operations managers as part of global cuts, sources say

Image
HSBC is cutting as many as 15% of its 2,000 senior operations managers worldwide, as it attempts to streamline its management ranks and reduce costs, two sources with knowledge of the matter said. The global job cuts at the London-headquartered bank will fall across several business units and geographical locations and result in the loss of at least 200 positions, mostly with the title of Chief Operating Officer (COO), the sources said. HSBC, which used to position itself as the world’s local bank, employs many COOs because country and business lines have their own separate COO, the sources said. HSBC declined to comment. The lender has been shrinking its sprawling global business for several years, downsizing in many regions and exiting some countries entirely as it tries to improve shareholder returns. The latest cuts are already under way, one of the sources said. CEO Noel Quinn said on Thursday HSBC has identified $1.7 billion of extra cost cuts it will make next year as it battl...

Goldman to cut thousands of staff as Wall Street layoffs intensify, source says

Image
Goldman Sachs Group Inc GS-N is planning to cut thousands of employees to navigate a difficult economic environment, a source familiar with the matter said. The layoffs are the latest sign that cuts are accelerating across Wall Street as dealmaking dries up. Investment banking revenues have plunged this year amid a slowdown in mergers and share offerings, marking a stark reversal from a blockbuster 2021 when bankers received big pay bumps. Goldman Sachs had 49,100 employees at the end of the third quarter after adding significant numbers of staff during the pandemic. Its headcount will remain above pre-pandemic levels, the source said. The workforce stood at 38,300 at the end of 2019, according to a filing. The bank is weighing a sharp cut to the annual bonus pool this year, a separate source familiar with the matter said. That compares with increases of 40 per cent to 50 per cent for top-performing investment bankers in 2021, Reuters reported in January, citing people with direct kn...

Media mogul Michael Bloomberg reportedly interested in buying either Dow Jones or Washington Post

Image
Former New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg at the UN Climate Change Conference, in Glasgow, Scotland, on Nov. 2, 2021. POOL/The Associated Press Billionaire Michael Bloomberg, the owner of Bloomberg L.P., is interested in acquiring either Wall Street Journal parent Dow Jones or the Washington Post, news website Axios reported on Friday, citing an unnamed source familiar with the matter. Such a merger would create a financial data and news giant, further firming up the world’s 12th-richest man’s strong hold on the business and likely allowing his company to sell more Bloomberg Terminals – the main source of its revenue. According to the Axios report, Mr. Bloomberg sees News Corp-owned Dow Jones, also the publisher of Barron’s and MarketWatch, as the ideal fit but would buy the Post if Amazon.com Inc founder Jeff Bezos was interested in selling. Bloomberg L.P., the Washington Post and Dow Jones did not immediately respond to Reuters’ requests for comment. Shares of News Corp were up ...

The Goldman Sachs company logo on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange, on July 13, 2021. Brendan McDermid/Reuters Goldman Sachs GS-N began laying off staff on Wednesday in a sweeping cost-cutting drive, with around a third of those affected coming from the investment banking and global markets division, a source familiar with the matter said. The long-expected jobs cull at the Wall Street titan is expected to represent the biggest contraction in headcount since the financial crisis. It is likely to affect most of the bank’s major divisions, with its investment banking arm facing the deepest cuts, a source told Reuters this month. Just over 3,000 employees will be let go, the source, who could not be named, said on Monday. A separate source confirmed on Wednesday that cuts had started. The cuts are part of broader reductions across the banking industry as a possible global recession looms. At least 5,000 people are in the process of being cut from various banks. In addition to th...

U.S. Justice Department official cleared to oversee Google probes, source says

Image
The U.S. Justice Department’s top antitrust official recently won approval from the department to oversee investigations involving Google parent Alphabet Inc GOOGL-Q, a person briefed on the matter told Reuters. The Wall Street Journal earlier reported the decision to allow Jonathan Kanter, assistant attorney general in charge of antitrust, to oversee matters involving the search engine and advertising company. The Justice Department and Google declined to comment on Friday. In November 2021, Google asked the Justice Department to consider requiring Kanter to recuse himself because of his work for a long list of Google critics like Yelp Inc, which Alphabet described as “vociferously advocating for an antitrust case against Google for years.” Bloomberg News reported in May that Kanter had been barred from working on Google investigations as the department considered whether he was required to be recused. On Wednesday, Google argued a U.S. judge should toss out a Justice Department ant...

Microsoft likely to receive EU antitrust warning over deal for Activision Blizzard, sources say

Image
Microsoft is likely to receive an EU antitrust warning about its $69-billion bid for “Call of Duty” maker Activision Blizzard ATVI-Q, people familiar with the matter said, that could pose another challenge to completing the deal. The European Commission is readying a charge sheet known as a statement of objections setting out its concerns about the deal which will be sent to Microsoft MSFT-Q in the coming weeks, the people said. The EU antitrust watchdog, which has set an April 11 deadline for its decision on the deal, declined to comment. Microsoft said: “We’re continuing to work with the European Commission to address any marketplace concerns. Our goal is to bring more games to more people, and this deal will further that goal.” The U.S. software giant and Xbox maker announced the acquisition in January last year to help it compete better with leaders Tencent and Sony. U.S. and U.K. regulators, however, have voiced concerns, with the U.S. Federal Trade Commission going to court to ...
