7 Relationship-Building Lessons I Learned By Partnering With Over 20 Franchises

Image
Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own. Franchising has become increasingly popular in recent years, and with good reason. There are two big reasons to do franchising: It allows you to partner with another business to share resources, customers and brand recognition. Secondly, the franchisor and franchisee rely on each other for growth — one can't grow without the other. So this creates an incentive for both to strengthen their relationship and keep each other happy. Business is rough. It's a battle full of discomfort, pain, haziness, unpredictability and uneasiness. When I consider all the pieces of this business puzzle, the biggest realization I have is that I need to build a team. By working with other entrepreneurs, we can go to "war" together and become stronger because we will have built a supportive network for each other. The age you should have your life sorted out (apparently)

Image
The experts out there are always giving us the age 'milestones'. There's an age when you have the most friends, there's the age when life is most expensive, there's the age that you're most likely to meet 'the one'. So it'll come as no surprise that there's also an age stamp on when you should have your life together. Yep, if you're worrying that you need to sort your life out and you're not sure when you're going to get around to it (we need to get through all the new releases on Netflix first, okay?) then take a look at this. Beagle Street Life Insurance carried out a study to find out when we tend to have our careers, love lives and social relationships 'sorted out' - and it's not clear what that means exactly - but the answer is 39. They surveyed 2,000 people to determine when everything seemingly falls into place for the average Brit. Apparently, there are some milestones that we are predicted to hit earlier than t...

Mimetic Desire: Do You Want It Because Some Else Has It?

Image
T o desire is human. But do we really want what we want... or do we want something because other people want it, too? The second season of HBO’s dramedy The White Lotus explores this idea through the mimetic theory of desire, a concept that originated from French thinker René Girard (and has gained fresh relevance after its mention on the captivating TV series). In the sixth episode of the series, Ethan (Will Sharpe) briefly references mimetic desire to explain why his friend Cameron (Theo James) pursued every girl Ethan ever liked. “You have a bad case of something called mimetic desire,” Ethan says. “If someone with higher status than you wants something, it means it’s more likely you’ll want it, too.” This suggests that Cameron wants something not because he thinks it’s valuable but because others have deemed it as such. As the plot progresses and tensions escalate between Ethan and Cameron, it becomes evident of jus...

Disney PJs to minor dinnertime strops: Are you a Christmas kidult?

Image
Here, writer and self-confessed "kidult" Rosie Mullender reveals her own regressive behaviour over the holidays – and delves into the psychology of festive adolescence  At 9pm on Christmas Eve last year, Mum handed me a brightly wrapped box. Inside, was a Minnie Mouse pyjama set (opens in new tab) , a jar of home-made hot chocolate with a matching red-and-white striped mug, and an Arthur Christmas DVD. I was overjoyed at receiving my first-ever Christmas Eve box – the trend which sees parents giving their children a few small gifts (opens in new tab) the night before Christmas. Except, of course, I’m not a child – I’m in my early forties. And even as I eagerly changed into my Disney (opens in new tab) PJs, while Mum whipped me up a hot drink, I wondered if I’d taken my tendency to embrace my inner child at Christmas a bit too far. At every other time of year, I’m a (mostly) responsible adult. I’ve got a mortgage, a freelance career built up from scratch, and a fondne...

Christmas Traditions Explained: Where Do They Come From And Why?

Image
'Tis the season to deck those halls, but why do we do the strange things we do in December? We have all the answers... Christmas - the most wonderful time of the year. A time for Christmas films (opens in new tab) , party dresses (opens in new tab) , festive hangovers (opens in new tab) and a hell of a lot of traditions. An overweight septuagenarian in a red suit. A stolen kiss under the mistletoe. An evergreen tree covered in fairy lights. Stockings filled with clementines - as well as Christmas gifts (opens in new tab) . And even more strange, puddings filled with coins.  December can be a baffling month filled with bizarre traditions we’ve all grown up enjoying and partaking in without ever fully knowing why we do them. Why do we pull explosive super-sized sweet wrappers over our stuffed turkey on Christmas Day? What’s coal got to do with morality? And as for that indoor tree (opens in new tab) business: what does felling a tree and dragging it into the living room ha...

I tried UberEats new mindfulness feature - is it any good?

Image
I'll be honest - Deliveroo and UberEats might have been on my "out" list for 2023. No shade to either of the takeaway giants - they're excellent at delivering nutrient-dense (and not so nutrient-dense) options when you're short on time, but for me, the end of last year was a whirlwind of Christmas parties and late nights at the office, which led to a weekly takeaway becoming something of a habit in our house.  While there's nothing wrong with ordering in occasionally (a balanced diet is about just that, after all - balance), I'll be the first to admit that when I was ordering takeaway in December, I was eating more mindlessly and more often than not, doing so glued to the TV. Plus, while the apps both offer a wide range of both indulgent and more healthy options (UberEats partners with over 700,000 restaurants worldwide), we weren't even considering my veg-packed go-to's like Farmer J and Leon by the time the festive season swung around.  So, a...

Has Remote Work Impacted Our Relationships With Other Employees? Find Out.

Image
Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own. The concept of remote work and the impact it could have on the productivity and motivation of employees, has been in discussion long before the Covid-19 pandemic. A 2013 Stanford University study with 500 employees in China reported that employee productivity increased by 13% as a result of working remotely in quieter environments. The pandemic forced employers and governments across the world to adopt the remote work model. According to Statista , the global collaboration software market revenues rose by a whopping $15.9 billion in 2019 to $19.2 billion in 2021. These figures are expected to increase over the next few years, as digital transformation and remote work are here to stay. Some companies believe that the best practice is a hybrid-first work model, while others are pursuing efforts to bring employees back to the office. In September 2022, Kastle Systems, a key-card property management com...

Pilates vs yoga: what's the difference and which is best?

Image
Pilates is all the rage in 2023, but do you know what the difference is between Pilates vs yoga? While you might be clued up on the benefits of pilates and be able to name your favourite Pilates exercises, actually defining the difference between Pilates and yoga is a little more tricky.  There's a lot of cross over between the two lengthening and strengthening workouts. Just like yoga for beginners (opens in new tab) , pilates for beginners is a good way for fitness newbies to start moving.  They also both focus on breath work and flowing between exercises, but there are some key differences between Pilates and yoga. For instance, while a 2019 study found that Pilates training was superior to yoga for improving functional movement, a British Medical Journal paper reported that those with mental health conditions reported greater reductions in depressive symptoms after practicing yoga. However, to complicate things further, there are many different types of yoga (like yin and...
