RCMP say two workers have died in an explosion at an oil and gas site in northern Alberta. Officers and emergency crews were called Saturday to the site near Slave Lake, about 250 kilometres north of Edmonton. The deaths are being investigated by Alberta Occupational Health and Safety. A government official says no further information is being released at this time. The Canada Energy Regulator has issued financial penalties against Trans Mountain Corp. related to the 2020 death of a worker. The regulator says the Crown corporation failed to take all reasonable care to ensure the safety and security of workers on the day of the incident. The incident occurred on Oct. 27, 2020, when a person working near Edmonton on the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion project was fatally injured. The person was disassembling a trench box at the time. The regulator has issued total fines of $164,000 against the company. Social media platform Twitter Inc suspended a bot account tracking its owner Elon Musk’s private jet, the account’s operator Jack Sweeney said on Wednesday. The account tracked movements of Musk’s private jet using data in the public domain and puts out alerts. Musk said in a tweet in November that his commitment to free speech “extends even to not banning the account following my plane, even though that is a direct personal safety risk.” Sweeney, a 20-year-old University of Central Florida student, tweeted on Saturday that Ella Irwin, Twitter’s vice president of trust and safety, requested the account be filtered and less visible to users. Twitter and Sweeney did not immediately respond to Reuters’ requests for comment. In media interviews, Sweeney has said that he turned down a $5,000 offer from the Tesla Inc chief executive officer in 2021 to shut down his bot account. A Canadian energy regulator said on Friday that it has laid charges against Suncor Energy Inc. SU-T after a worker was injured in 2019 on the Terra Nova floating oil production storage and offloading vessel. Suncor is charged with failing to ensure that every worker wore a safety harness in certain situations and used appropriate protective equipment, the Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Offshore Petroleum Board said in a statement. On Dec. 29, 2019, a Terra Nova worker fell from a ladder while conducting gas testing. Suncor, Canada’s second-largest oil producer, has faced scrutiny from investors over its poor safety and operational record, resulting in former chief executive Mark Little resigning in July. At least a dozen more cuts on Friday night affected workers in the company’s Dublin and Singapore offices, the report said, citing people familiar with the matter.
