How to Know It's Time to Say Goodbye to a Kitchen Appliance

Image
Part of being a food writer is writing about things that are popular, because popularity drives clicks and clicks are what keeps the lights on, so to speak. It’s also just good service journalism. Positioning yourself as too cool or smart for the appliance that’s trendy with the masses doesn’t help anyone, not to mention it comes off as elitist. An air fryer might “just be a convection oven,” but it’s an accessible way for people who live in apartments or can’t afford to buy a new oven to get convection oven results by paying a mere $100. Anyway. This can translate into me using an appliance more often than I would if I was just cooking to eat, but sometimes that results in finding new and exciting ways to use the appliance that I wouldn’t have arrived at “naturally.” It also leads to saturation, and moving on to whatever new and shiny appliance is trending that year, for the clicks, but also to alleviate appliance burnout. That is obviously not a problem most people have, but kno...

This Fast Food Chain Ranked Last in Customer Loyalty

Image
When it comes to fast food chains, fanatics tend to go all in on their obsession and show loyalty to their favorites. Getty Images Chains will also mimic this back to their loyal fans, using strong rewards programs and promotions that provide personal and community-based incentives to keep customers coming back. But a new study from Market Force found that not all fast food eateries are created equal when it comes to loyalty. After surveying 5,173 customers from North America on all things fast food across 53 different chains, McDonald's ranked lowest for customer loyalty, even though it was the biggest chain on the list by a landslide. The chain has been under scrutiny this year after investigations found a location of the Golden Arches guilty of violating child labor laws, among other issues including employees seeking unionization and claiming unfair wages and hours. The chain that drove t...

Where to Get Emergency Ice on Christmas Day

Image
When making my Christmas (shopping) lists and checking them twice, I often forget to consider ice, which makes some amount of sense. Depending on where you are in the world, ice is probably not at the forefront of your mind in the days leading up to Christmas, especially if you’ve been shoveling snow, driving through snow, or just looking at snow. But you do need ice on Christmas (both day and eve). You need ice for shaking cocktails, making iced tea (or any other iced beverage), chilling champagne, filling coolers, or—if you’re fun and fancy—keeping your caviar or shrimp cocktail at the proper temperature. Unfortunately, there is no instant ice- making hack, and it takes several hours in the freezer for those water molecules to align themselves into a solid crystal. You could go buy ice, but many stores are closed for most or all of the day. But you know who (probably) isn’t closed? McDonald’s. I say “probably” because nearly all of the restaurants are franchises, so it’s not a gu...
