You Should Be Scheduling Your iPhone Updates for Later

Image
Photo : nikkimeel ( Shutterstock ) Updating your iPhone is annoying. Yes, the updates are often full of new features and changes that make upgrading worthwhile , but it can be hard to find the time to install a brand new update on your iPhone. Taking your phone out of commission during the day isn’t always an option. Wouldn’t it be nice if Apple let you schedule these updates for when you actually had time? Well, ask and ye shall receive. As it turns out, Apple includes an option to schedule software updates on each and every iPhone. It’s just that f or some reason, the company hides it from us. I’m not sure why—i t’s certainly not due to a lack of screen space: Half of the Software Updates settings page is blank. The option also isn’t featured in the Automatic Updates settings menu either , so don’t go looking for it there. Speaking of which, when I refer to scheduling updates for later, I’m not talking about iOS’ Automatic Updates feature. Sure, this option will theoretical...

You Need a New Admin Account on Your Mac

Image
Photo : Margirita_Puma ( Shutterstock ) Some Mac users have a single administrator account on their machines. There’s nothing wrong with that if you’re the only person who uses the computer. If others have access your Mac, though , you should create a second account for added security. Here’s why. When you share an admin account with others, there is nothing stopping them from creating a new user account and removing admin privileges from your own account. You can see this issue play out in this Reddit post , where the poster’s ex made themselves the admin and blocked the OP from a host of actions on the Mac. As long as they know your account password, they can make themselves the admin on your machine. The simplest way to prevent this situation is to create a separate admin account only you can access. First, click the Apple logo in the top-left corner of your screen and select System Settings or System Preferences . Now go to Users & Groups . Click the Add Account or the...

Why You Should Update 'Pokémon Scarlet' and 'Violet' on Day One

Image
Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet , the latest dual entry in developer Game Freak’s iconic series, aren’t set to hit retail and digital retail outlets until Nov. 18. But even with a week to go (as of this article), the game won’t ship finished. When you buy the game, you’ll need to update it immediately if you want the full Scarlet and Violet experience. As this update is the game’s first, it goes by the very simple version 1.0.1. The big news with this update is it’s required to experience online play , a major component of Scarlet and Violet . If you choose to skip the update (understandable, since you want to enjoy the $60 game you just bought) you’ll still be able to play the main game, but any online functionality will be unavailable. According to Nintendo, online play is required for a bunch of Scarlet and Violet’s features. You can participate in Tera Raid Battle events, in which four players take on one “Terrastallized” Pokémon . You can team up with three other play...

Your iPhone Has a Hidden Music Quiz

Image
Photo : Tada Images ( Shutterstock ) Who remembers the games that shipped with classic iPods? You could have a pixel war in   Parachute , smash blocks in Brick , play cards in Solitaire , and test your knowledge of your own iPod’s library with Music Quiz . Of course, Apple has since discontinued the iPod, but they seem to have trouble letting go of the past.   Music Quiz lives on as a hidden iPhone game. The hidden music quiz hasn’t been around forever, but isn’t all that new either. Apple first added it to the iPhone not as a game but as a shortcut, back in 2020 with iOS 14 . The game w as part of a small series of “Starter Shortcuts”—the idea, I assume, was to offer users a quick look at what was possible with shortcuts (even though the app launch two years prior with iOS 12). Either way, it doesn’t seem to have been a wholly effective marketing campaign— I had no idea this music quiz existed. It’s just the kind of hidden feature that’s a pleasant surprise to discover ....

How to Bind Your VPN to Your Torrent Client and Why You Should

Image
Photo : DenPhotos ( Shutterstock ) When you’re downloading torrents on your computer, consider using a VPN . Your ISP and advertising companies don’t need to know you’re downloading the latest Linux distros or other totally legal content, and a good VPN can help you improve your privacy. Most people just download a VPN and assume all their data is safe from prying eyes, but it’s not true. Once you’ve selected the right VPN, you should bind it to the torrent client to ensure that your IP address doesn’t leak. Some VPNs have a kill switch that disables your internet connection when it’s not routed through your VPN. Even if you’ve enabled this feature, kill switches can fail and compromise your privacy. The best way to keep your data private while downloading torrents is to bind your client to the VPN directly. Which torrent client should I use? There are plenty of torrent clients out there, but Qbittorrent is among the best. It’s free, works very well, and doesn’t have ads or othe...

How to Spot an Email Scam

Image
Photo : JLauer ( Shutterstock ) We’ve all taken those brief surveys where you get a $10 gift card for a movie theater or a BOGO coupon for Chipotle. But what about a free $325 Yeti cooler for taking a Dick’s Sporting Goods survey? Sounds like a steal, right? That was the latest strategy implemented by a new email scam that hooked people in and stole their information . 02:15 How to Steam an Egg Wednesday 11:19AM 02:50 Chopping Basics Wednesday 11:09AM What made this specific email scam special was the fact that it was able to reach many people by getting around Gmail’s spam filter, which exposed more people to this type of scam than usual. Luckily, whether it’s a Yeti cooler or AirPods headphones that’s being showcased, there are some simple ways to not fall prey to these type of scams. How did the Yeti cooler sc am work? The email used an advanced coding technique to fool Gmail’s spam filter into thinking it was a legit email with important information. Then it asked peop...

The Best Firefox Extensions Everyone Should Use

Image
Photo : monticello ( Shutterstock ) If you use Firefox, you can make it a better browser by installing add-ons. Yes, that’s what Mozilla calls them—they’re talking about what everyone else knows as “ extensions.” Whatever you call them, there are good ones out there that can help you do everything f rom improving your privacy to getting around restrictions you’ll encounter across the internet . A note: T hough there are hundreds good add-ons, be wary of installing too many at once. Going overboard could actually compromise your privacy and slow down your browser. Although we’re recommending useful add-ons here, always check which permissions these extensions request before you install them. Some of these add-ons request access to all the websites you visit. While this permission is necessary for them to function, it’s also a sign if the developers go rogue, your private data could be exposed. When installing these sorts of features, you always face a trade-off between priva...

Stop Using Spotlight on Your iPhone (and Do This Instead)

Image
Photo : Kicking Studio ( Shutterstock ) Spotlight, once an essential tool in your iPhone productivity arsenal, has become nearly unusable on iOS 16. It sometimes displays search results almost instantly, but more often than not it takes a few seconds (or more) to find things. The latency is particularly noticeable on older iPhones, and the inconsistency of a once-reliable tool is pretty sad to see. The same feature has been facing similar issues on Mac, but at least there are alternatives—such as Alfred and Raycast — that make up for it. On your iPhone, you can’t replace Spotlight with an alternative, but you can try a couple of workarounds. Use your iPhone’s App Library If you keep swiping left on your iPhone’s home screen, you will find the App Library at the very end . Once there, swipe down to open the search bar and type the name of the app you want to find. You’ll see that this search box instantly loads the results you’re looking for. We’ve tried this on a three-year-o...
