Tim Hortons brand soup base recalled for containing insects

A Tim Hortons branded chicken noodle soup base was recalled in Alberta and southwestern Ontario because it contained insects. In an emailed statement, Tim Hortons said Thursday the recall does not impact canned soups sold in grocery stores, only the soup base that was made and sold to a few isolated restaurants. It said there were no reported illnesses. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) said the recalled product was available to purchase in those provinces up to and including Oct. 20. The agency said the soup base, which weighs 3.54 kilograms per unit, was sold to hotels, restaurants and institutions. Tim Hortons said the incident only impacted a few isolated Tim Hortons restaurants, but the company proactively asked all restaurant owners that received product from the supplier in question to dispose of their product. Grocery industry making progress on code of conduct, but work will stretch into the new year

Nathan Denette/The Canadian Press Industry players say there has been “remarkable” headway toward a self-regulatory code of conduct for Canada’s grocery sector, but a key aspect is still a work in progress: a mechanism for enforcing the rules and arbitrating disputes. The steering committee of industry groups developing the code has drafted “provisions” for the behaviour of both retailers and their suppliers – a breakthrough in discussions that had dragged on for months, with warnings about a failure to reach a consensus as recently as this past summer. However, a recent draft discussion document obtained by The Globe notes that dispute-resolution mechanisms “are still under development.” The document states that these will include a range of options, “from informal discussion through to some type of formal arbitration,” but does not lay out who would act as arbitrator or how such a system would function. Shawcor acquires Kanata Electronic Services, financial terms not disclosed

Shawcor Ltd. SCL-T says it has acquired Kanata Electronic Services Ltd., a privately owned manufacturer and supplier of specialty cable assemblies and wire harnesses for the nuclear and aerospace industries. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Shawcor says the Toronto-based company will be integrated into its ShawFlex wire and cable business. Kanata president Barbara Miller says the company has been a long-standing partner to ShawFlex and looks forward to an even closer working relationship. Shawcor says Kanata serves the nuclear and spacecraft industries with custom cable assemblies.
