Russia says it won’t accept an oil price cap; warns of cutoffs

Image
Russian authorities rejected a price cap on the country’s oil set by Ukraine’s Western supporters and threatened Saturday to stop supplying the nations that endorsed it. Australia, Britain, Canada, Japan, the United States and the 27-nation European Union agreed Friday to cap what they would pay for Russian oil at $60-per-barrel. The limit is set to take effect Monday, along with an EU embargo on Russian oil shipped by sea. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Russia needed to analyze the situation before deciding on a specific response but that it would not accept the price ceiling. Russia’s permanent representative to international organizations in Vienna, Mikhail Ulyanov, warned that the cap’s European backers would come to rue their decision. “From this year, Europe will live without Russian oil,” Ulyanov tweeted. “Moscow has already made it clear that it will not supply oil to those countries that support anti-market price caps. Wait, very soon the EU will accuse Russia of using...

Canadian dollar edges higher as investors weigh Fed projections

Image
The Canadian dollar CADUSD moved slightly higher against its U.S. counterpart on Wednesday as oil prices rose and investors grappled with more hawkish than expected projections by the Federal Reserve. The loonie was up 0.1% at 1.3530 to the greenback, or 73.91 U.S. cents, in volatile trading as equity markets swung in and out of negative territory after a Fed rate decision. The U.S. central bank raised interest rates by half a percentage point, as expected, and projected that the policy rate would rise to 5.1% in 2023, slightly higher than investors expected. “The Fed has downshifted the pace of tightening, but they’re not done yet,” Robert Kavcic, a senior economist at BMO Capital Markets, said in a note. “In addition to how much further they have to go, the major question is how long rates will have to stay at peak levels to ensure inflation pressure is sufficiently quashed.” On Tuesday, the loonie touched its strongest level since Dec. 5 at 1.3519 as U.S. data showed an easing of ...

Standing Your PS5 Up Vertically Is Fine, Actually

Image
Photo : Mr.Mikla ( Shutterstock ) For decades, video game companies have given players a choice in how to position their consoles. The PS2, Wii, Xbox 360, Wii U, PS4, and more all let you decide whether to position them horizontally or vertically, with some even including a stand. The PS5 doesn’t buck this trend, and Sony encourages you to orient it however you want. That didn’t stop a spate of viral rumors that keeping your PS5 upright could damage it. Frankly, that’s bullshit. The story kicked off six days ago when gaming site Wololo.net reported a hardware flaw in the PS5 could cause the console’s “liquid metal thermal paste” to leak into other components of the machine when played in an upright position. Wololo cited a few different repair technicians, who reported seeing issue crop up when customers brought their units in for repair. The site even claimed this was affecting consoles that hadn’t yet been taken out of the box. The report took off, with many other gaming outlet...

Nunavut energy corporation targeted in cybersecurity attack

Nunavut’s energy corporation says cybersecurity experts are investigating after it was targeted in a cyberattack over the weekend. The Qulliq Energy Corporation says its network was breached, but it’s too early to determine whether the attackers accessed customer information. It says anyone affected will be notified as the investigation continues. Power plants in the territory continue to operate as usual, but computer systems and the corporation’s customer care and administrative officers are currently unavailable. The Nunavut government’s IT system was the target of a cyberattack in 2019. The Northwest Territories Power Corporation was hit by a ransomware attack in 2020. https://www.tausiinsider.com/nunavut-energy-corporation-targeted-in-cybersecurity-attack/?feed_id=323374&_unique_id=63e11c8b04046

Quebec Innu community seeks $2.2-billion from Hydro-Quebec for Churchill Falls destruction

Image
A Quebec Innu community is suing Hydro-Quebec for $2.2-billion, claiming the Churchill Falls hydroelectric station has destroyed a significant part of their traditional territory. The lawsuit filed Friday in Quebec Superior Court by the Innu of Uashat Mak Mani-Utenam claims the megaproject’s reservoirs and more than 1,000 kilometres of transmission lines “flooded and destroyed” part of their traditional territory and disrupted the community’s traditional activities. The band council says construction of the 5,428-megawatt station in Labrador and its transmission facilities in the 1960s and early 1970swas done without the consent of the community near Sept-Iles, Que. A 1969 agreement that allows Hydro-Quebec to purchase the majority of the electricity generated at the station and reap most of the profits ends in 2041. The community is asking the court to recognize its Aboriginal title to the affected territory and wants an injunction to prohibit the Crown corporation from making any n...
