3 Rituals to Help You Build Resilience and Beat Stress

Image
Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own. I was watching Good Morning America recently and saw a segment in which they recommended people take short breaks in between work tasks. The program cited an analysis in the journal PLOS ONE showing that "microbreaks" during the workday increase energy and decrease fatigue. This is the essence of the recovery methodology I've learned from research and personal experience, dating back to my days as a teenage lifeguard at Jones Beach in New York. We focus on practicing what I call resilience rituals and how they help us combat depletion, exhaustion and burnout while rebuilding resilience. The forces driving us toward burnout are chronic stress (driven in part by being constantly engaged online), multitasking and forgetting to tend to the needs of our bodies and minds. The results can be catastrophic for our health and wellbeing, but there's good news: Resilience rituals, if practice...

Image
Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own. While we often get caught up in keeping up with quantity (making more calls, building more SKUs, working more hours, etc.) it is delivering high-quality work that is a surefire way to please clients and earn respect. But if your headspace is clouded with a lengthy to-do list, an unrealistic deadline, or feelings of burnout, quality can fall by the wayside. Prioritizing your well-being will allow you to show up as the peak version of yourself. The following are a few tips you should employ to improve your mental space and overall output. How to Prevent 'Human-Giver Syndrome' This Holiday Season

Image
Photo : Bits And Splits ( Shutterstock ) The season of giving can be…a lot. As much as you want to do all the things (buy all the presents, go to all the light displays, attend all the parties), if you do, you risk burn out . In addition, you are likely doing a lot of things for others, often, ( but not always) if you are a female. “Human-g iver s yndrome,” a term coined by Amelia and Emily Nagowski in their life-changing book, Burnout , is a subset of burnout you are particularly susceptible to this time of year. Here’s how to spot it and avoid it so you can enjoy your family and friends without exhausting yourself in the process. How does giving cause burn out? Doing unto others is good, of course, but constant caretaking and giving of yourself is a recipe for burnout. The problem is when people think that helping others is a way to move through their stress cycle. Instead of taking care of themselves, you’re taking care of everyone else to your own detriment . You’re helping...

Employee burnout is getting worse. Employers have work to do

Image
Natalie Archibald, vice-president of people at Clio, in Burnaby, B.C., on Nov. 29. DARRYL DYCK Employees at Clio can take their dogs to work and have access to a flexible paid time-off program. Staff at Schneider Electric Canada can save up their paid time off that the company will augment for a paid leave of absence down the road. And Capital One gives its employees an “Invest in Yourself” day every month to do whatever recharges their souls. These are just some examples of what employers across Canada are doing to prevent burnout among employees and help them manage their mental health. The Burnaby, B.C., headquarters of Clio has a yoga studio, a games lounge, community gardens and libraries. In addition, the company provides every employee with $2,000 a year for counselling services and a monthly wellness allowance. But the jewel in Clio’s wellness crown is the flexible paid-time-off program launched this year. Instead of allotting vacation time by years of service, the legal prac...

The 4-Day Workweek Could Make Burnout Worse

Image
Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own. The clamor for a shorter workweek is probably something you've read about in countless articles by now. There's even a running list of companies provided by Newsweek that have incorporated this as part of their work model. "With staff wellbeing at the forefront of our minds, we have been experimenting with a more modern approach to work focusing entirely on outcomes rather than a more traditional input measurement," Adam Ross, Awin's chief operating officer, explained in 2021. https://www.tausiinsider.com/the-4-day-workweek-could-make-burnout-worse/?feed_id=328230&_unique_id=641c9c79b3634

Burnout isn’t just an individual problem of too much work. Here’s how managers can help

Image
Burnout often has been viewed as an individual problem resulting from a person’s weakness and inability to cope. But Christina Maslach, who developed the scale used worldwide to measure burnout, and Michael Leiter, a consultant and adjunct professor at Acadia University in Wolfville, N.S., argue in The Burnout Challenge: Managing People’s Relationships with Their Jobs, that burnout is a mismatch between the job and the person. The conditions and requirements set by managers, the workplace and the culture are out of sync with the needs of the people who work there, leading to undue, continual stress. While individuals could and should take action to improve their situation, organizations must also play their part, moving in steady, incremental and logical ways to reduce burnout in the workplace. Doing so starts with understanding those mismatches better and the profiles of affected people you find around you because it’s not the same experience for everyone. The six types of burnout ...

4 Simple Self-Care Rituals to Help You Build More Resilience

Image
Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own. Emotional outbursts are a sign of exhaustion and even burnout ... Take time to replenish yourself before you hit a wall. Being resilient allows people to respond to unexpected challenges thoughtfully, with calm, grace and poise. But when we are depleted — physically, emotionally, mentally, or spiritually — we are more likely to react or even lash out when things go wrong. The challenges don't necessarily need to be life-altering to spur a reaction when depletion is our reality. Something as simple as a comment, traffic or ruined plans can quickly seem catastrophic. We saw an example of this level of serious depletion earlier this year at the Academy Awards when actor Will Smith lost his cool, storming on stage to slap comedian Chris Rock after Rock made a joke about Smith's wife. Smith's wife, Jada, was resilient enough to deal with it in the moment with little more than a pained expressi...
