How to Tell If Someone Paid for Their Twitter Verification

Image
Image : Sattalat Phukkum ( Shutterstock ) Twitter is currently on fire. With Elon Musk as owner and CEO, the company has changed many rules and regulations users (and advertisers) had come to expect from the platform. The latest drama, however, concerns Twitter verification, and it’s throwing a wrench in the ability to tell which accounts are real and which are fake. The “blue checkmark” on Twitter was more than just a status symbol. Twitter’s verification process served as a means of identification: If you saw a blue check next to an account, say, for a politician, you knew that account was official, and not an impersonator. Accounts needed to be vetted to prove both their identity and noteworthiness before receiving a blue check, which is a good thing. Under the direction of Musk, though, anyone can buy a blue check by subscribing to Twitter Blue for $8 a month. Since the change, identifying legitimate users has been a challenge. In fact, Twitter Blue subscribers have taken adva...

You Need a New Admin Account on Your Mac

Image
Photo : Margirita_Puma ( Shutterstock ) Some Mac users have a single administrator account on their machines. There’s nothing wrong with that if you’re the only person who uses the computer. If others have access your Mac, though , you should create a second account for added security. Here’s why. When you share an admin account with others, there is nothing stopping them from creating a new user account and removing admin privileges from your own account. You can see this issue play out in this Reddit post , where the poster’s ex made themselves the admin and blocked the OP from a host of actions on the Mac. As long as they know your account password, they can make themselves the admin on your machine. The simplest way to prevent this situation is to create a separate admin account only you can access. First, click the Apple logo in the top-left corner of your screen and select System Settings or System Preferences . Now go to Users & Groups . Click the Add Account or the...

Don't Delete Your Twitter Account (Do This Instead)

Image
Photo : Emre Akkoyun ( Shutterstock ) If you’re thinking of deleting your Twitter , I wouldn’t blame you (I’d only ask what took you so long). Things are wild over there right now, and stability sure isn’t on the horizon. However, before you take the nuclear option and say goodbye to Elon Musk and his ilk, consider not deleting your account: Don’t stay, mind you—just leave in a safer way. Why deleting your Twitter is dangerous When you initiation the deactivation process for your Twitter account, it takes 30 days before your account is permanently deleted, tweets and all. However, once that 30 days is up, your username is fair game. After all, you deleted your account, and, therefore, relinquished your claim over the name. It now returns to the “people,” or at least the first person to notice its availability, where it can be used in a new account for as long as that user wants it. This is the nature of the internet: Abandon a username, and someone else will snatch it up. But it ...

The Best Firefox Extensions Everyone Should Use

Image
Photo : monticello ( Shutterstock ) If you use Firefox, you can make it a better browser by installing add-ons. Yes, that’s what Mozilla calls them—they’re talking about what everyone else knows as “ extensions.” Whatever you call them, there are good ones out there that can help you do everything f rom improving your privacy to getting around restrictions you’ll encounter across the internet . A note: T hough there are hundreds good add-ons, be wary of installing too many at once. Going overboard could actually compromise your privacy and slow down your browser. Although we’re recommending useful add-ons here, always check which permissions these extensions request before you install them. Some of these add-ons request access to all the websites you visit. While this permission is necessary for them to function, it’s also a sign if the developers go rogue, your private data could be exposed. When installing these sorts of features, you always face a trade-off between priva...

3 Easy Ways to Improve Your Software Developers' Efficiency

Image
Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own. I've observed an odd trend in company board meetings. Marketing and sales vice presidents will come in with charts, reports and finely-tuned data. The CFO will fire up a dashboard detailing every penny of revenue and expense. The HR chief will share hiring metrics down to the last employee. But when it comes to engineering, the lifeblood of any modern company, there's little data — just a vague sense of what's working and what's not. The reality is that engineering efficiency and developer experience remain a black box, even at some of the most tech-forward organizations. And inside that box lurk inefficiencies on an enormous scale. I've heard of big banks that employ tens of thousands of developers who are operating at 30% efficiency because of bloated processes and unnecessary toil . This is more than a waste of resources. Frustrated developers quit. Company payroll sags under t...

This Is the Fastest Way to Launch Apps on Your Mac

Image
Photo : Krisda ( Shutterstock ) There are plenty of ways to launch apps on your Mac—to start with, y ou can pin apps to your dock or use Spotlight to search for and open apps . T here’s an even faster way to launch apps, though: by using a floating dock. There are a couple of apps that allow you to quickly open a dock wherever your mouse cursor is. If you use a large monitor or if you’re using the Trackpad to navigate on your MacBook, these floating dock apps will save you time by using a keyboard shortcut to launch apps . You might especially appreciate this if you’re among users who have been complaining about Spotlight search becoming slower with time:   Even if you replace it with a better alternative , manually typing app names takes more time than using a floating dock app. If this sounds appealing, try downloading Charmstone or Orbital . These apps have a similar feature set, and they’re equally good at allowing you to launch apps fast. Charmstone Screenshot : Pra...
