Volkswagen confirms looking in Canada to build first North America cell plant

Image
Volkswagen VWAGY has begun searching for a site for the German carmaker’s first battery-cell factory in North America, its CEO announced on Thursday. Confirming an earlier Reuters story, Volkswagen CEO Oliver Blume and Canadian industry minister Francois-Philippe Champagne signed an addendum to their existing memorandum of understanding from August, agreeing to identify suitable sites for the planned cell plant. Blume said that battery technology was key for the company’s strategy and that it was committed to investing in North America. “Canada is one logical option for the construction of a gigafactory in the region of North America,” he said, adding it offered ideal economic conditions and high sustainability standards. Such a plant would be Volkswagen’s first gigafactory outside Europe. Volkswagen’s battery subsidiary Powerco also announced it was extending a deal to co-operate with Belgium’s Umicore on shipping cathode material to Canada. The German auto giant said it was a long-...

Pfizer to invest more than US$2.5-billion to expand European manufacturing

Pfizer Inc PFE-N is investing more than $2.5 billion at its drug making plants in Belgium and Ireland, gearing up to launch new products it hopes can replace lost revenue as patents expire and COVID-19 vaccine sales decline. The drugmaker said on Friday it plans to spend more than 1.2 billion euros ($1.26 billion) to expand its Puurs, Belgium, manufacturing site, matching the investment at its Dublin, Ireland, plant announced on Thursday. In Belgium, some projects related to the investment announced on Friday are already underway, with others planned to begin early next year, Pfizer said in a press release. At the plant in Ireland, expansion is expected to begin in 2024 and to be completed in 2027, the company said. The Puurs site has played a key role in the production of COVID-19 vaccine shots Pfizer developed with its German partner BioNTech using messenger RNA (mRNA) technology. Output started there in late 2020 when Europe and the United States began rolling out shots to tackle ...

Twitter chaos too much? There are plenty of other options

Image
Twitter has been engulfed in chaos since billionaire Tesla CEO Elon Musk took the helm, cutting the company’s workforce in half, upending the platform’s verification system, reinstating previously banned accounts including those of white nationalists and suspending journalists who’ve been covering him. While it’s not clear if the drama is causing many users to leave – in fact, having a front-row seat to the chaos may prove entertaining to some – lesser-known sites Mastodon and even Tumblr are emerging as new (or renewed) alternatives. Here’s a look at some of them. (Oh, and if you are leaving Twitter and want to preserve your tweet history, you can download it by going to your profile settings and clicking on “your account” then “download an archive of your data.”) Mastodon Sharing a name with an extinct mammal resembling an elephant, Mastodon has emerged as a front-runner among those curious about life beyond the blue bird. It shares some similarities with Twitter, but there are som...
