U.S. factory orders top expectations in October amid strong gains in demand for machinery

Image
New orders for U.S.-manufactured goods increased more than expected in October amid strong gains in demand for machinery and a range of other goods, which could allay concerns of a sharp slowdown in manufacturing. The Commerce Department said on Monday that factory orders jumped 1.0 per cent after rising 0.3 per cent in September. Economists polled by Reuters had forecast orders advancing 0.7 per cent. Orders shot up 12.8 per cent on a year-on-year basis in October. The Federal Reserve’s fastest rate-hiking cycle since the 1980s as it battles inflation is dampening demand for goods, undercutting manufacturing, which is also being squeezed by the rotation of spending back to services. An Institute for Supply Management survey last week showed its measure of the nation’s factory activity contracted in November for the first time in 2-1/2 years. Manufacturing accounts for 11.3 per cent of the U.S. economy. October’s jump in factory orders was driven by a 2.2 per cent rise in bookings fo...

U.S. retail sales fall in November after hefty gains; labour market still tight

Economists also noted that goods prices tumbled in November, which could have weighed on retail sales last month. The discounts by retailers were also probably a drag on the dollar value of sales. Retail sales are mostly goods and are not adjusted for inflation. “It is hard to know at this point if the November weakness represented a fundamental change in the trend or reflected some inevitable c...

Joe Manchin bill would delay tax credits for electric vehicles

Puskar/The Associated Press Ratcheting up his criticism of the Biden administration, Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin on Wednesday moved to delay new tax credits for electric vehicles, a key feature of President Joe Biden’s landmark climate law. Manchin said guidelines issued by the Treasury Department allow manufacturers in Europe and other countries to bypass requirements that significant portions of EV batteries be produced in North America. The climate law, officially known as the Inflation Reduction Act, “is first and foremost an energy security bill,” Manchin said, adding that “the EV tax credits were designed to grow domestic manufacturing and reduce our reliance on foreign supply chains for the critical minerals needed to produce EV batteries.” Manchin’s bill comes as Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm and White House climate adviser Ali Zaidi are set to attend the Washington, ...
