Starbucks workers strike at more than 100 U.S. stores

A Starbucks location in Pittsburgh, Pa., on Nov. 7. Gene J. Puskar/The Associated Press Starbucks SBUX-Q workers at more than 100 U.S. stores are on strike Thursday in their largest labour action since a campaign to unionize the company’s stores began late last year. The walkouts coincide with Starbucks’ annual Red Cup Day, when the company gives free reusable cups to customers who order a holiday drink. Workers say it’s often one of the busiest days of the year. Starbucks declined to say how many red cups it plans to distribute. Workers say they’re seeking better pay, more consistent schedules and higher staffing levels in busy stores. Stores in 25 states planned to take part in the labour action, according to Starbucks Workers United, the group organizing the effort. Strikers are handing out their own red cups with union logos. Starbucks, which opposes the unionization effort, said it is aware of the walkouts and respects its employees’ right to lawfully protest. The Seattle compan...

Thousands of Starbucks Workers Strike on Red Cup Day

Image
A beloved Starbucks holiday turned into means for demonstration by disgruntled workers as strikes broke out all over the country on Thursday. Twitter Over 2,000 Starbucks employees at 112 locations went on strike during Starbucks' Red Cup Day, a one-day event where customers can order any holiday-crafted beverage and receive that year's special edition of a free, reusable red cup (while supplies last, of course). The holiday often causes chaos with fans lining up before stores open to ensure they get their hands on one. But this year, chaos of a different kind reigned. Strikes organized by a national union decided to hit back at Starbucks and use the ever-popular day to drive their demands home amid an ongoing fight for national unionization for Starbucks stores that's been met with much pushback. How 'Planned Happenstance' Can Add Luck to Your Career

Image
Photo : Chaay_Tee ( Shutterstock ) Many of us think we need a defined career plan—a strategy of sorts that puts our career on an upward trajectory, like a line graph that moves forward and up in responsibility, salary, and satisfaction, resulting in success. And we think that if we don’t have that plan, if we are uncertain about what to do or what the next best move is, we might be sunk. Some of the most frequent comments I hear from clients, friends, and family who are feeling unsettled in their job are things like: “I don’t know what I want. I need a plan that puts me on the right path.” “I wish someone would tell me what job or what industry to work in so that I know what to do with my life.” “I need clarity around my career goals and priorities. I want to map out my next 5, even 10 years.” This is common because a natural response to job uncertainty is the belief that not having specific answers and a plan is what is keeping us from the career we want. But what if I told you t...

8 of the Best Gifts for Teachers, According to Teachers

Image
Photo : Monkey Business Images ( Shutterstock ) It’s a perennial quirk of the holiday season: trying to pick the perfect gifts for the people in your life you’re super grateful for, but don’t actually know personally. What conveys cheer and thankfulness to a mail carrier and is actually useful? What should you gift your doorman? A nd what about your kid’s teacher? Morning drop- off hellos, weekly emails, and the occasional conference aside, y ou’re not exactly friends with your kid’s teacher, but you owe them big . They are, after all, helping to mold your child into a smart, decent person they are destined to be, 35-odd hours a week . They deserve gifts all year round, but maybe you’re thinking a “#1 Teacher” mug will suffice for now. It won’t. ( They have enough mugs.) We asked teachers what they really want for Christmas and they expressed instant interest in helping compile the following list. As one noted , “I have a box full of gifts I’ve gotten from students I will regi...

Starbucks workers plan three-day walkout at 100 U.S. stores

Image
Starbucks SBUX-Q workers around the U.S. are planning a three-day strike starting Friday as part of their effort to unionize the coffee chain’s stores. More than 1,000 baristas at 100 stores are planning to walk out, according to Starbucks Workers United, the labor group organizing the effort. The strike will be the longest in the year-old unionization campaign. The union says it expects the strike will shutter some stores entirely; at others, managers or other workers may keep the stores open. A message seeking comment was left with Starbucks Friday morning. This is the second major strike in a month by Starbucks’ U.S. workers. On Nov. 17, workers at 110 Starbucks stores held a one-day walkout. That effort coincided with Starbucks’ annual Red Cup Day, when the company gives reusable cups to customers who order a holiday drink. More than 264 of Starbucks’ 9,000 company-run U.S. stores have voted to unionize since late last year. Starbucks opposes the unionization effort, saying the c...

7 Last-Minute Gift Card Ideas (That Aren’t Amazon or Starbucks)

Image
Photo : Jukov studio ( Shutterstock ) It’s less than a week before Christmas, which marks the official start of “Amazon and Starbucks gift card” season. There’s nothing wrong with gift cards per se, but these two in particular are so commonly gifted that they practically scream “I panicked and got this at the last minute”—which is exactly what you don’t want in a last-minute gift. On top of being predictable, Amazon and Starbucks have spent most of 2022 engaging in blatant union-busting, which is a great reason to not give them your money. For this exact reason, unionized Starbucks workers are asking customers to skip the gift cards this year: In a Dec. 16 press release from Starbucks Workers United , partner Nabretta Hardin pointed out that “Each year, [Starbucks] makes over a hundred million dollars from gift cards that are never even used by customers.” That’s free money for Starbucks to spend on whatever they like, and by now, it’s obvious that they really like union-busti...

This Coffee Brewing Method Offers the Most Caffeine

Image
Photo : Africa Studio ( Shutterstock ) Not all coffees are created equal . Y ou already know this if you’ve been brewing your own for more than a few cups’ time: C offee b eans vary wildly in taste, strength, and even caffeine content. B ut even how you brew your coffee changes its strength. I don’t just mean the flavor. If you’re drinking coffee for the caffeine boost, your brewing method can affect how much of a jolt each serving will give you . You might thing a n espresso shot is the best way to get moving in the morning, but an espresso— even a full or double shot from a specialty coffee shop—actually doesn’t have the most amount of caffeine per cup —at least according to tests conducted by popular Coffee Youtuber James Hoffmann. Hoffmann is the author of The World Atlas of Coffee , runs Square Mile Coffee Roasters, and won the 2007 Barista championship, so you can count on his brewing expertise . Hoffmann got his hands on a $2, 500 Lighttells caffeine analyzer and went...

11 of the Weirdest Careers for Creative People

Image
Photo : UfaBizPhoto ( Shutterstock ) If you want to work in film, television, or theater production, there are (many) worse jobs than intimacy coordinator. This relatively new position involves facilitating any scenes that involve physical intimacy—from kissing to sex—working as liaison between the director and producers and actors, making sure everyone consents to everything, and consulting with directors about how to achieved their vision. Productions with big enough budgets to employ intimacy coordinators take it very seriously: In order to be hired, you must be certified through programs approved by SAG-AFTRA (the actor’s union) and pass a background check, but your biggest hurdle will likely be getting hired in the first place. Hollywood is about who you know, so people skills and a background in production are soft requirements, plus you’ll have to be well-versed in the intricacies of how these kinds of scenes are produced. Many intimacy coordinators come from acting backgro...
