Via Rail plans to resume trains on its Toronto-Ottawa and Toronto-Montreal routes Tuesday, the rail service said days after a CN train derailment forced the cancellation of those trains scheduled for Christmas and Boxing Day. CN confirmed in a statement that the tracks where its train derailed on Christmas Eve will be reopened Tuesday and said Via Rail plans to run all trains on the route, but on a modified schedule. That modified schedule will be available on Via Rail’s website and communicated to impacted customers “as soon as possible,” it said. The carrier had canceled 2,589 flights as of Tuesday 2.25 pm ET or roughly two-thirds of its schedule, representing 86% of all U.S. airline cancellations, according to tracking website FlightAware. Additionally, Southwest called off about 2,500 flights scheduled for Wednesday and over 1,000 flights from its Thursday schedule. New research suggests a four-day week may be gaining mainstream momentum in corporate Canada as workplaces continue to fine tune post-pandemic schedules and working conditions. A survey by recruitment firm Robert Half found 91 per cent of senior managers polled say they support a four-day work week for their team. It found the majority of managers also anticipate their company will transition to a shorter working week within the next five years. The poll also found nearly three-quarters of workers would put in four 10-hour days in exchange for an extra day off a week. Mike Shekhtman, senior regional director with Robert Half, says a shorter work week could help with employee recruitment and retention.
