How to Tell If Someone Paid for Their Twitter Verification

Image
Image : Sattalat Phukkum ( Shutterstock ) Twitter is currently on fire. With Elon Musk as owner and CEO, the company has changed many rules and regulations users (and advertisers) had come to expect from the platform. The latest drama, however, concerns Twitter verification, and it’s throwing a wrench in the ability to tell which accounts are real and which are fake. The “blue checkmark” on Twitter was more than just a status symbol. Twitter’s verification process served as a means of identification: If you saw a blue check next to an account, say, for a politician, you knew that account was official, and not an impersonator. Accounts needed to be vetted to prove both their identity and noteworthiness before receiving a blue check, which is a good thing. Under the direction of Musk, though, anyone can buy a blue check by subscribing to Twitter Blue for $8 a month. Since the change, identifying legitimate users has been a challenge. In fact, Twitter Blue subscribers have taken adva...

Weeks after that announcement, competing beauty retailer Ulta announced their partnership with DoorDash in select cities. In September, the company...

Disney to Freeze Hiring, Possibly Lay Off Employees

Image
Disney is tightening its belt. Steven Ferdman I Getty Images Disney CEO Bob Chapek. The media and resort company's CEO Bob Chapek wrote in an internal memo sent to Disney leaders on Friday that it will embark on cost-cutting initiatives, from slimming down business travel to reducing hiring to potentially laying off employees, CNBC first reported . "I am fully aware this will be a difficult process for many of you and your teams. We are going to have to make tough and uncomfortable decisions," he wrote. The move comes after Disney reported disappointing quarterly earnings last Tuesday. Its streaming business grew more quickly than analysts expected, but it's still losing $1.47 billion a year, though that loss has been part of Chapek's stated plan to build out streamers including Disney+. It reported $20.15 billion in quarterly revenue, below analysts' expectat...

Don't Delete Your Twitter Account (Do This Instead)

Image
Photo : Emre Akkoyun ( Shutterstock ) If you’re thinking of deleting your Twitter , I wouldn’t blame you (I’d only ask what took you so long). Things are wild over there right now, and stability sure isn’t on the horizon. However, before you take the nuclear option and say goodbye to Elon Musk and his ilk, consider not deleting your account: Don’t stay, mind you—just leave in a safer way. Why deleting your Twitter is dangerous When you initiation the deactivation process for your Twitter account, it takes 30 days before your account is permanently deleted, tweets and all. However, once that 30 days is up, your username is fair game. After all, you deleted your account, and, therefore, relinquished your claim over the name. It now returns to the “people,” or at least the first person to notice its availability, where it can be used in a new account for as long as that user wants it. This is the nature of the internet: Abandon a username, and someone else will snatch it up. But it ...

FBI 'Extremely Concerned' Over TikTok Sharing Data with China

Image
The Federal Bureau of Investigation is "extremely concerned" about the possibility of China-owned TikTok handing over U.S user data to the country's government. Alex Wong I Getty Images Christopher Wray at his confirmation hearing in 2017. How Your Brand Can Thrive Online With Diversified Content

Image
Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own. Keeping your audience entertained in the golden age of multi-platform media has become critical to online success. To accomplish this, you must learn to switch up your branded content and experiment on new and different platforms. Why should you change up your branded content? Having a diverse content strategy is critical in today's oversaturated, competitive and ever-changing marketing environment. If your marketing strategy heavily relies on branded content, you must ensure that it is diverse in terms of how, when and where it is shared. You risk losing audience interest and engagement if you use the same content and formats across all platforms. Only by stepping outside of your comfort zone and learning to take calculated risks will your brand's content thrive. Otherwise, by not embracing content diversification and investing in new platforms, you are passing up opportunities to engage you...

Tampax Is Going Viral for Tweeting About Being in 'Their DMs'

Image
The chaos at Twitter has people (and brands) Tweeting their drafts — and some are getting cheekier than others. The social team at Tampax, for example, had apparently been saving this one for a while. You're in their DMs. We're in them. We are not the same. — Tampax US (@Tampax) November 21, 2022 Riffing off the classic internet meme format of "You are in their direct messages," which means to romantically approach someonem plus "I am…" the brand made use of its unique positionality to its customers. And it looks like the funny Tweet paid off. It's gotten more than 50,000 likes. Tampax also quote-tweeted it a few hours later and tied it to the emotional, apocalyptic jokes that have emerged on Twitter, on the news that last week some 1,200 engineers resigned from the company on Thursday. refused to let twitter shut down before we shared this tweet https://t.co/XVHHOcaZIK — Tampax US (@Tampax) November 21, 2022 "Refused to let twitter s...

Barbara Corcoran Takes Employees On Lavish Shopping Spree

And if you're working for Barbara Corcoran, you might actually get to leave with something. 3 Timeless Elements of Storytelling That Will Grow Your Business

Image
Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own. I run a digital marketing agency. If we are able to track a client's revenue and connect it to the ads we run (an ecommerce client, for example), we can tell them — to the cent — how much they make in revenue for each dollar they spend on ads. If that sounds like a numbers game ... it is. But when I pitch clients, I don't lead with numbers. When I pitch a client, I don't tell them we can generate $34.12 for every $1.00 they spend on ads. Surprisingly, that's not what seals the deal. Don't get me wrong, the numbers are important, and I share numbers in every pitch I make, but they're not the most important thing. What matters more than numbers, or any other detail I could share, is whether or not I can tell a good story. Frankly, numbers bore clients. They're just a box to be checked. If I start to talk numbers too much, the client's eyes will glaze over, and I can see ...

How To Utilize PR During A Recession

Image
Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own. The economic climate is, unfortunately, uncertain. Many public relations and marketing firms are anxious about their futures in light of recession forecasts and claims made by experts that we are already formally in a recession. Though many economists think we already are, the National Bureau of Economic Research , the body responsible for officially declaring when a recession happens in the United States, has not yet announced whether or not we are in a recession. There is mounting evidence that suggests a shaky economic future. A recent poll conducted by Spendesk identified where companies were most likely to make cuts in response to the recession. The results are especially tough for anyone working in public relations, advertising and marketing — sectors of the digital media world that are widely expected to take a massive hit. The months and years ahead will undoubtedly be trying for many busine...

How to Tell If an Instagram Account Is Fake

Image
Photo : HakanGider ( Shutterstock ) It’s no secret Instagram is plagued with fake accounts, bots, and impersonators. Just take a look at any comments section on any trending post and you’ll see it’s swarmed with thirst traps and crypto “moguls. ” But there are far more elaborate fake accounts out there that have mastered the art of seeming genuine on the social network, and it can be difficult to tell whether they are real— or not, and out to scam you . Most of these offenders offer some kind of “service” that requires you to place an order or give away sensitive information, from the more innocuous (you email address or phone number so they can add you to a spam list), to the potentially damaging ( a two-factor verification code or banking information) . Some of these accounts are crafted with such precision that the conventional rules of thumb—look at their profile pics, check their frequency of posts, consider their follower to following ratio, and general   level of act...
