4 Things You Can Do To Truly Disconnect From Work Over The Holidays

Image
Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own. Managing email anxiety is especially challenging for entrepreneurs when taking a much-needed break. You might be taking time off over the holidays to spend time with family, but mentally, you're back in the office because you can see your emails are piling up. Escaping the pressures of building and growing your business is almost impossible when you don't effectively manage your inbox. While the idea of deleting your inbox is a satisfying thought, I think most of us can agree that may not be the best customer service move. I don't think my clients would enjoy learning that their emails are being deleted simply because I'm trying to relax and recharge. Fortunately, we don't have to take such drastic measures. https://www.tausiinsider.com/4-things-you-can-do-to-truly-disconnect-from-work-over-the-holidays/?feed_id=377618&_unique_id=648fcf213c801

How to Spot an Email Scam

Image
Photo : JLauer ( Shutterstock ) We’ve all taken those brief surveys where you get a $10 gift card for a movie theater or a BOGO coupon for Chipotle. But what about a free $325 Yeti cooler for taking a Dick’s Sporting Goods survey? Sounds like a steal, right? That was the latest strategy implemented by a new email scam that hooked people in and stole their information . 02:15 How to Steam an Egg Wednesday 11:19AM 02:50 Chopping Basics Wednesday 11:09AM What made this specific email scam special was the fact that it was able to reach many people by getting around Gmail’s spam filter, which exposed more people to this type of scam than usual. Luckily, whether it’s a Yeti cooler or AirPods headphones that’s being showcased, there are some simple ways to not fall prey to these type of scams. How did the Yeti cooler sc am work? Your Gmail Account Has Unlimited Addresses

Image
Photo : Jarretera ( Shutterstock ) One Gmail, one address. That seems right. After all, you have one phone number, and one home address. The same should be true for your email addresses, Gmail included. As it happens, though, your Gmail account has an unlimited number of addresses you can use whenever you want, fooling everyone from Netflix to spammers alike. There are actually a couple of methods here. The first is what allows you to turn your single gmail address into infinite addresses, through a tactic called “plus addressing” (a fitting name). In order to take advantage of plus addressing, you simply type a plus (+) after the local-part (the name before the @), then type whatever you want. For example, if my Gmail address were jake@gmail.com, I could type jake+lifehacker@gmail.com, or jake+gomedia@gmail.com. The service you’re using that email with will think it’s an entirely new address, but any emails to that address will still be sent to your inbox. This works for any Gmai...

How to Write a To-Do List You’ll Actually Do

Image
Photo : Respiro ( Shutterstock ) A to-do list is probably one of the most common strategies for keeping track of tasks and goals. But the problem with long and overly ambitious to-do lists is that they can overwhelm us with how much there is to accomplish, leaving us struggling to prioritize or even knowing where to start. A long list can also increase our desire to multitask, ultimately making us less productive . Here’s how to make a short, sweet— and effective— to-do list. How long should a to-do list be? A good to-do list (or set of lists) has anywhere from five to ten tasks on it—and no more than a dozen in total. While there is no magic number, research suggests that we may struggle to make decisions when presented with more options than that. One strategy is to make a list of five to eight work-related (or school- or family-) tasks to accomplish for the day with a separate list of two to three chores or personal tasks. Categorizing separately can reduce confusion and help...

Beware of Holiday Shipping Notification Scams

Image
Photo : mundissima ( Shutterstock ) It’s no secret scammers get more skilled and ingenious with time. Part of their strategy is knowing when is the best time to target certain people. As the holidays approach and people are expecting packages from Black Friday shopping or early Christmas gifts to arrive, scammers are taking advantage of the time to strike confusion and catch people off guard with shipping scams. If you’ve gotten a text or email message that seems to be from the United States Postal Service (USPS) or any shipping company with a link, be alert. These kinds of shipping scam messages have been on the rise since May and are expected to keep increasing through the holiday shopping season, according to a news report from WGAL, an affiliate of NBC. How do shipping message scams work? Shipping message scams try to mimic a shipping text update that you might expect to receive from the USPS or another shipping company. They usually claim that your shipment will be returned ...

National Bank scraps mortgage portability

Image
National Bank of Canada no longer allows customers to transfer their existing mortgages after purchasing new properties, meaning clients hoping to move to new homes can’t hold on to low interest rates locked in before the recent surge in borrowing costs. The change, which applies nationwide, was implemented on June 30 as part of “a regular review” of the bank’s service offerings, National Bank spokesperson Alexandre Guay said in an e-mail. The lender did not answer a question about whether it had alerted clients who might be affected by the decision, but Mr. Guay noted that the move “did not involve any modifications to mortgage contracts, which must be communicated formally.” In an e-mail to a borrower reviewed by Tausi Insider, National Bank said it had stopped offering rollover mortgages, which it described as a “financing solution” that allowed borrowers to transfer the interest rate, remaining balance and remaining term of an existing mortgage to a new loan. The feature, which i...

Apple and Amazon reportedly resume advertising on Twitter

Image
Amazon.com Inc and Apple Inc are planning to resume advertising on Twitter, according to media reports on Saturday. The developments follow an e-mail sent by Twitter on Thursday to advertising agencies offering advertisers incentives to increase their spending on the platform, an effort to jump-start its business after Elon Musk’s takeover prompted many companies to pull back. Twitter billed the offer as the “biggest advertiser incentive ever on Twitter,” according to the email reviewed by Reuters. U.S. advertisers who book $500,000 in incremental spending will qualify to have their spending matched with a “100% value add,” up to a $1 million cap, the email said. On Saturday, a Platformer News reporter tweeted that Amazon is planning to resume advertising on Twitter at about $100 million a year, pending some security tweaks to the company’s ads platform. However, a source familiar with the matter told Reuters that Amazon had never stopped advertising on Twitter. Separately, during a ...

Twitter to introduce new controls for ad placements, according to email

Image
Twitter Inc will roll out new controls as soon as next week to let companies prevent their ads from appearing above or below tweets containing certain keywords, the social media platform told advertisers in an email on Thursday. The new controls are part of Twitter’s effort to reassure and lure back advertisers that have pulled ads off the platform since it was purchased in October by billionaire Elon Musk, amid reports from civil rights groups that hate speech has risen since the acquisition and after several banned or suspended accounts were reinstated. Twitter earns nearly 90% of its revenue from selling digital ads. Musk recently attributed a “massive drop in revenue” to civil rights organizations that have pressured brands to pause their Twitter ads. In a call on Thursday with an advertising industry group, a Twitter representative said the platform was considering bringing its content moderators, many of whom are contracted through third-party vendors, in-house, according to a ...

Jeff Chiu/The Associated Press Elon Musk’s Twitter has dissolved its Trust and Safety Council, the advisory group of around 100 independent civil, human rights and other organizations that the company formed in 2016 to address hate speech, child exploitation, suicide, self-harm and other problems on the platform. The council had been scheduled to meet with Twitter representatives Monday night. But Twitter informed the group via e-mail that it was disbanding it shortly before the meeting was to take place, according to multiple members. The council members, who provided images of the email from Twitter to The Associated Press, spoke on the condition of anonymity due to fears of retaliation. The e-mail ...

Cold e-mails are the new cold calls: Here’s how to improve your response rate

Image
Ryan Standil is a former lawyer and the owner of Write To Excite. He leads workshops for businesses and governments about effective writing in the workplace. Eric Janssen teaches sales and entrepreneurship at the Ivey Business School at Western University in London, Ont. Have you ever tried to e-mail a busy person who was unfamiliar with you? Maybe you were searching for a job, seeking advice or hoping to make a sale. A study of two million e-mail users revealed the long odds of obtaining a response: On average, people who receive fewer than 100 e-mails a day respond to 25 per cent of them, and people who receive at least 100 e-mails a day respond to just 5 per cent. Fortunately, you can boost your response rate by applying proven techniques.
