Canon 10x32 IS binocular review

Image
Who are the Canon 10x32 IS binoculars for? They’ve got a high price tag, magnify the same as many others that are much cheaper and their objective lens size isn’t anything to write home about. So what’s so special about them? Well, that question is answered as soon as you hold them up to your eye. Canon is using a Porro II prism optics design that includes field flattener lens elements in order to produce an even and flat view through the binoculars. That doesn’t really mean anything to the uninitiated until held up to the eye and then it’s immediately apparent how important this is for improving the view. It’s as if our eyeballs were given zoom powers, able to view the world through the binoculars as if they weren’t really there. That’s helped by the apparent field of view which sits at 55.3 degrees.  This is what elevates the Canon 10x32 IS into the ranks of the best binoculars out there. But there’s more to these binoculars than just the view through the eyepieces, so let’s t...

What are medicinal mushrooms?

Image
Medicinal mushrooms have a long and rich history. For centuries, they have been used as immune-boosters, antibacterial agents, and even remedies for inflammation, fatigue and chronic metabolic conditions. But until recently, medicinal mushrooms were mostly used by ancient medicine practitioners. However, the practice of supplementing with these functional fungi is quickly gaining popularity in the West. So do they live up to the hype? And can ancient medicine really be the answer to modern health problems? It may be tempting to dismiss medicinal mushrooms as just another fad. Sure, these supplements tend to be marketed with grandiose health claims, and the internet is full of misinformation about their qualities. However, scientists and medical professionals are increasingly turning to ancient medicine in search of effective remedies. The research into the health benefits of medicinal mushrooms may be still in its infancy, but the preliminary results are promising.  Here, we look...

Volcanic eruptions on the moon happened much more recently than we thought

Image
A full moon shines in the sky above a volcanic eruption on the moon. Lunar samples collected by China's Chang'e 5 rover show that similar eruptions occurred on the moon around 2 billion years ago. (Image credit: Shutterstock) (opens in new tab) Volcanoes on the moon were still erupting at least 2 billion years ago, around 1 billion years more recently than scientists previously believed was possible. And the secret to these younger eruptions may lie in the type of magma oozing from these volcanoes , according to a new study. Until recently, the only information scientists had about the moon's volcanic history came from the lunar samples retrieved during the Apollo missions around 50 years ago. These samples contained volcanic minerals dating to around 3 billion years ago, and researchers at the time believed that these minerals came from some of the last eruptions to occur on our satellite. But in December 2020, China’s Chang'e 5 rover collected new samples from...
