Do This Instead of Keeping Your Phone Out of Your Bedroom at Night

Image
Photo : Antonio Guillem ( Shutterstock ) Keep your phone out of your bedroom: That’s standard advice for good sleep hygiene , and I’ve never been able to do it. For one thing, it seems silly to go buy a standalone alarm clock when I’ve got a perfectly good one on my phone—and it’s more customiz able, anyway. For another, where the heck else am I going to put it? 02:15 How to Steam an Egg Wednesday 11:19AM 02:50 Chopping Basics Wednesday 11:09AM Yes, I know. There are smart, sleep-conscious individuals out there who create a little charging station in their living room. Alarm clocks are cheap; you can get one for literally two dollars at IKEA. And you’re probably fooling yourself if you think that scrolling your phone all evening is “helping you wind down,” or that scrolling all morning is “helping you wake up.” I know all this. But I still can’t be bothered to plug it in anywhere else. Fortunately, there is a solution, and it’s so simple I am embarrassed for all the sleep hack g...

Whether You Really Need to Pee After Sex, According to Science

Image
Photo : VGstockstudio ( Shutterstock ) If you have a vagina, you’ve probably been told that it’s an absolute must to pee immediately after having sex to prevent urinary tract infections (UTIs). But it turns out there isn’t a lot of evidence to support this idea. There is shockingly little research on the question of whether this oft-repeated advice actually works. One study in a journal called Evidence Based Practice found that, overall, it doesn’t seem to make a difference. But that’s just one study, and the results didn’t point strongly in either direction. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) does not include peeing after sex in its tips for preventing UTIs . Here’s what they do recommend: Wash the skin around the anus and the genital area. Drink plenty of fluids (including water) to flush bacteria out of your urinary system. Empty your bladder as soon as you feel the urge or about every two to three hours. They point out that factors like being pr...

These Symptoms Are (Fairly) Normal After Having Sex

Image
Photo : oneinchpunch ( Shutterstock ) Hopefully you feel blissfully exhausted after sex and not too worried about what’s happening to your insides afterwards. But since sex is a full-body activity, it makes sense that you might experience some physical symptoms afterwards. “Sex means a lot of things, takes a lot of forms, and can have different effects on each of our different bodies,” Dr. Lyndsey Harper , OB/GYN and founder of Rosy , tells TausiInsider. “There are lots of variables at play which can lead to lots of different symptoms and experiences.” Below is a list of some of the most common physical symptoms that can happen to your body after sex, and why they’re usually nothing to worry about. Cramping “If the cervix (the bottom part of the uterus that lives at the top of the vagina) is touched during sex, it can cause uterine cramping,” Harper explains. “This can feel like cramping you might get before you start your period or after you have a pelvic exam or pap smea...

Image
Photo : Sergii Sobolevskyi ( Shutterstock ) If you’re going home for the holidays with your partner, you might think that your sex life has to be put on pause. After all, you’ll probably be crammed in a guest room— or your childhood bedroom— right next to your parents’ room and, well, sex can be loud for all sorts of reasons. But what if your sex life doesn’t have to go cold like the weather outside even if your parents are sleeping next door? The solution is fairly simple— have sex quietly. “Recent worldwide searches for the term ‘quiet sex’ highlight an increase of 156% in the last 30 days demonstrating that it’s a common issue ,” sex and relationship expert Charlotte Johnson at Mega Pleasure says . “In fact, quiet sex can sometimes be much more intimate and exciting for those involved, as it becomes a secret in itself and something only you and your partner can enjoy.” Sex experts share their best tips below for the best way to have sex quietly at home during the holidays. This Is the Most Common New Year's Resolution Mistake

Image
Photo : Dilok Klaisataporn ( Shutterstock ) Many new year’s resolutions (and old year’s resolutions ) involve starting new, life-improving habits. And while that’s a great idea in theory, the reality is that making lifestyle changes is really hard. Unfortunately, there’s no silver-bullet solution to this problem, but there is a common mistake many people make when beginning new habits. Here’s what to know, including how to avoid it. Why starting a new habit is so hard While having lofty goals is one thing, it’s important to have realistic expectations for yourself. But even that’s hard. TikTok and Instagram are awash with posts that condense months—or even years—of hard work into one-minute transformation videos. We want and expect instant gratification, but sadly, that’s not how habit forming works. The figures vary, but one study suggests that it usually takes around two months of doing something to make it a habit—and a lot of us don’t make it that long. So where do we go wro...
