If you drive a sedan or anything smaller, you’re probably familiar with the feeling of being hit by the glaring, bright lights from oncoming SUVs at night. It can often feel like they’re driving with their high beams on, leaving you unable to see clearly until the SUV passes you. That can obviously be dangerous, and that is why General Motors has recalled nearly 340,000 SUVs.

The nationwide recall is for their daytime running lights (DRLs), which may not deactivate once the headlights are turned on, potentially affecting the visibility of oncoming drivers and increasing the chances of a car crash. The problem breaches the requirements of the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 108, “Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment.”
Which SUVs are affected?
The following make and models are the cars with the potentially faulty light system:
2021 GMC Yukon
2021 GMC Yukon XL
2021 Chevrolet Tahoe
2021 Chevrolet Suburban
2021 Cadillac Escalade
2021 Cadillac Escalade ESV
According to General Motors, there have been no official reports of crashes or injury caused by the DRLs recall.
What to do if you have one of these SUVs?
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), dealers will update the Body Control Module software, free of charge, for the SUVs affected by the recall. Owners can expect a notification letter to be mailed to their home starting Dec. 19, 2022.
