Canadian dollar notches seven-week high as greenback tumbles on CPI data

Image
The Canadian dollar CADUSD strengthened to a seven-week high against its U.S. counterpart on Thursday as U.S. inflation pressures cooled and Bank of Canada Governor Tiff Macklem said the economy could avoid a major rise in the unemployment rate. The loonie was trading 1.2% higher at 1.3370 to the greenback, or 74.79 U.S. cents, after touching its strongest level since Sept. 20 at 1.3334. “The U.S. dollar fell sharply in a broad-based way and the loonie has benefited from that,” said Rahim Madhavji, president at KnightsbridgeFX.com . “There were a lot of people that were long the U.S. dollar and short some of the other currencies … so a lot of people are closing position.” The greenback fell sharply against a basket of major currencies, bond yields tumbled and Wall Street rallied after U.S. consumer prices rose less than expected last month, data that may allow the Federal Reserve to ease up on aggressively hiking interest rates. The Bank of Canada has also been tightening at a rapid

Canon 10x32 IS binocular review

Image
Who are the Canon 10x32 IS binoculars for? They’ve got a high price tag, magnify the same as many others that are much cheaper and their objective lens size isn’t anything to write home about. So what’s so special about them? Well, that question is answered as soon as you hold them up to your eye. Canon is using a Porro II prism optics design that includes field flattener lens elements in order to produce an even and flat view through the binoculars. That doesn’t really mean anything to the uninitiated until held up to the eye and then it’s immediately apparent how important this is for improving the view. It’s as if our eyeballs were given zoom powers, able to view the world through the binoculars as if they weren’t really there. That’s helped by the apparent field of view which sits at 55.3 degrees.  This is what elevates the Canon 10x32 IS into the ranks of the best binoculars out there. But there’s more to these binoculars than just the view through the eyepieces, so let’s t

What are medicinal mushrooms?

Image
Medicinal mushrooms have a long and rich history. For centuries, they have been used as immune-boosters, antibacterial agents, and even remedies for inflammation, fatigue and chronic metabolic conditions. But until recently, medicinal mushrooms were mostly used by ancient medicine practitioners. However, the practice of supplementing with these functional fungi is quickly gaining popularity in the West. So do they live up to the hype? And can ancient medicine really be the answer to modern health problems? It may be tempting to dismiss medicinal mushrooms as just another fad. Sure, these supplements tend to be marketed with grandiose health claims, and the internet is full of misinformation about their qualities. However, scientists and medical professionals are increasingly turning to ancient medicine in search of effective remedies. The research into the health benefits of medicinal mushrooms may be still in its infancy, but the preliminary results are promising.  Here, we look

The Reason Water Tastes Bad To You Isn't Just in Your Head

Image
P OV: You get to the convenience store only to find out that your favorite type of water is out of stock, and all that's left is the one brand you really don’t like. The devastation alone makes your mouth even more parched. While some may argue that all water tastes the same, that simply isn't the case for most of us. However, if you consider yourself a water connoisseur and can distinguish one brand from another with ease, a board-certified otolaryngologist says that there’s a scientific reason why water may taste bad to you. In fact, you may actually be a supertaster and not even know it…yet. What gives water its flavor? This may sound like an oxymoron, but water does, in fact, have flavor. According to Inna A. Husain , MD, a board-certified otolaryngologist and medical director of laryngology Community Hospital, water is made up of tons of minerals and inorganic compounds that can give it a distinct taste. “Th

What Is the VENOM Vulnerability and How Can You Protect Yourself From It?

Image
The VENOM vulnerability affects all major CPU vendors, including Intel, AMD, and ARM. VENOM allows malicious actors to read the content of your computer’s memory and potentially execute code remotely. If you have a vulnerable CPU, your computer may be at risk, so it’s crucial to know how to protect yourself against this exploit! What Is the VENOM Vulnerability? VENOM stands for Virtualized Environment Neglected Operations Manipulation, and just like other vulnerabilities, it's existed for quite a while. Its code in the Common Vulnerabilities and Exposure database is CVE-2015-3456 , meaning the security loophole was disclosed publicly in 2015 by CrowdStrike ’s Jason Geffner, a senior security researcher.
