Astronomers Saw This Spectacular Fireball Coming Before It Lit Up the Great Lakes

Image
For just the sixth time in history, astronomers managed to spot a small asteroid shortly before it smacked into our planet in dramatic fashion. On Saturday, Astronomer David Rankin spotted a 2.3-foot-long (0.7 meter) asteroid in observations from the Mount Lemmon sky survey in Arizona. That's not very big as far as asteroids go, but this one was on a collision course with Earth. Although it wasn't large enough to pose a substantial risk, it was big enough to put on quite a show as it tore through the atmosphere.  Word went out immediately in the middle of the n

'Dead to Me' Finale Recap: Yet Another Bittersweet Ending

Image
Netflix dark comedy Dead to Me faced a tough prospect with its third and final season. Not only did the pandemic delay shooting by several years, but co-lead Christina Applegate received a multiple sclerosis diagnosis midway through production. Still, all the scripts were written and Applegate was determined to complete the show in the way creator Liz Feldman had intended it to be finished. Warning: Spoilers from here on. The final 10 episodes of Dead to Me wrapped up the story of Jen (Applegate) and Judy (Linda Card

Is an Intriguing and Popular New Alternative to Burial or Cremation

Image
Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own. The phrase "human composting" sounds like something out of dystopian science fiction without any context — but it's a new and green way lay the dead to rest. The term describes turning remains into healthy soil, and it's legal in Colorado, Oregon, Vermont, and Washington. In addition, the process was just legalized in California and will soon be legal in New York. Mat Hayward / Contributor | Getty Images According to Axios , Recompose is a Seattle funeral home leading the way in promoting human composting as a form of interment. Funerals held there have traditional elements; however, rather than taking their final rest in a satin-lined box, the deceased is at the center of a "laying-in" ceremony. In a process Recompose calls "natural organic reduction," materials such as wood chips, alfal

Are Musicians Special? Should They Want to Be?

Image
Source: S. Hermann / F. Richter from Pixabay Many of us who have made music an important focus of our lives chose to do so before we were full-fledged adults. Developmentally speaking, this is not surprising. People typically do a lot of identity construction during adolescence into their emerging adulthood. Being Special Often, the idea of being special is prominent in young people’s initial immersion into organized music participation. It can be an important motivational factor for many kids, especially in taking music lessons and participating in school music activities. As I have written elsewhere: Early in a child’s music experience, when everything is new, moments of feeling special abound. You feel special having a shiny silver band instrument. You feel special taking your position on stage on the risers with the other robed choir members. If, as a beginning violinist, you can scratch out something that sounds the least bit like “Hot Cross

Mazda CX-60 long term test

Image
Money well spent? You would struggle to argue otherwise after a few minutes poking and prodding your way around inside. This is a delightfully well-appointed cockpit with carefully chosen materials, subtle but attractive f lourishes throughout and – praise be – an infotainment interface that’s controlled by a dial and supported by a raft of actual buttons and switches. It’s a welcome respite from the cold, tech-heavy and unimaginative cabins of the Germans it aims to worry – and one that has yet to leave me longing for absolutely anything, courtesy of the impressively expansive kit list. The CX-60 is big and made visually bulkier by the questionable execution of Mazda’s generally acclaimed Kodo design language. Here, it’s manifested in a disproportionately long bonnet (presumably to allow space for the traditional straight sixes coming in 2023), an expansive, featureless side profile and a bulky rear - although I’m happy that it hasn’t fallen into the trap of sacrif

'Avatar: The Way of the Water' Drops Another Visually Breathtaking Trailer

Image
Another visually impressive trailer is out for Avatar: The Way of the Water , the sequel to James Cameron's 2009 epic. With a reported $250 million budget , Avatar 2 is one of the most expensive films of all time, and that cash can be seen in the footage released Monday. Check out the big screen-worthy trailer below. The trailer opens with Na'vi flying atop winged creatures, then shows big vistas of the people's stunning resort-worthy water world. We then see robotic intruders apparently marching onto the Na'vi's shores, along with sweet moments of Sully's expanded family

Reality Stars Are Sentenced To Prison For a '15-Year Fraud Spree'

Image
It turns out the Chrisleys should have known better. Todd and Julie Chrisley, stars of the reality TV show, " Chrisley Knows Best ," were sentenced in an Atlanta court today to multiple years in prison for defrauding banks out of $30 million and committing tax fraud. The sentence marks the final chapter in the spectacular fall of the reality star couple who once headlined USA Network's top-rated original series. Their show, which revolves around the lives of a Georgia real estate tycoon and his wealthy family, was so popular that USA was planning a spinoff series, and E! was also set to launch a series with them. But the only series the Chrisleys will be participating in now is consecutive years in prison. A federal judge sentenced Todd Chrisley to 12 years plus 16 months probation. His wife, Julie, received seven years in prison plus 16 months probation. Related: What Happened to Theranos CEO Elizabeth Holmes? Everything from Her Net Worth to Where She Is

New Mercedes-Benz EQG specs confirmed as testing ramps up

Image
The front electric motors are mounted low at each side within the axle. The rear electric motors are integrated more inboard within a newly developed de Dion-style rear axle conceived specifically for the EQG and chosen to provide “good traction and flexibility of the suspension”. Each electric motor is able to provide individual drive to each wheel through a mechanical two-speed gearbox, offering both high and low-range gearing. Together with traditional on-road driving modes (Eco, Comfort and Sport), the new G-Class will offer three off-road modes – Trail, Rock and Sand. An additional creeper mode allows the driver to set a pre-determined speed in off-road driving. To facilitate off-road performance, the four electric motors are also able to simulate the three locking differentials (one in each axle, and one in the transfer case) of internal-combustion-engine G-Class models. In extreme conditions, the collective drive can be channelled to a single wheel to retai

Netflix CEO Reed Hastings Reacts to Bob Iger's Disney Return, Says He Thought He'd Run For Office

Image
Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own. Disney's firing of Bob Chapek and rehiring Bob Iger as CEO shocked many, including co-CEO of Netflix, Reed Hastings. L: Reed Hastings, Bloomberg R: Bob Iger, Samir Hussein || Getty Images Hastings, however, didn't express concern over Iger as a competitor. In a tweet, he made it clear that he thought Iger was better suited for an even bigger job — president of the United States. Ugh. I had been hoping Iger would run for President. He is amazing. — Reed Hastings (@reedhastings) November 21, 2022 "Ugh," tweeted Hastings Monday, "I had been hoping Iger would run for President. He is amazing." The dramatic executive reshuffling happened following Disney's board learning that Chapek's leadership was driving top-shelf employees away. Despite having said in the past that he wasn't interested in

Santa Claus Rally? Here’s What Needs to Happen

Image
We are approaching that time of year when the stock market gets into a holiday mood triggering a Santa Claus rally into the new year. With the S&P 500 index (NYSEARCA: SPY) trading down (-17%) and Nasdaq (NASDAQ: QQQ) down a naughty (-29%) for the year, investors are left to ponder if markets have the wherewithal to stage a Santy Claus Rally. The biggest concern for the markets is rising interest rates. The U.S. Federal Reserve will have its final meeting for the year concluding on Dec. 14, 2022. They will determine the final interest rate hike and provide commentary and a question-and-answering session detailing their thoughts heading into next year. Leading up to the rate decision, there are two crucial economic reports and a slew of other factors to be aware of. Here’s what needs to happen for the Santa Claus rally to occur. This Company Is Building IoT Towers Across the World in the Vein of Nikola Tesla

Image
Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own. Nikola Tesla famously envisioned ubiquitous energy supplied via a global network of towers. Although the inventor never realized this dream, one company is building on his legacy with a decentralized approach to Internet of Things (IoT), broadband, and telecommunications. Recently, Chirp — a blockchain startup specializing in IoT that competes with the likes of Helium — installed its first master IoT gateway, known as the "Blackbird Master Gateway," on a radio tower in the Höxter region of Germany. The installation, similar in many respects to Tesla's Wardenclyffe Tower in Long Island, aims to allow thousands of validators to form a network for future IoT users. Tom Cruise's 'Mission Impossible' Helicopter Disrupts Filming of PBS Show 'Call the Midwife'

Image
Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own. Mission Impossible movies involve lots of gunfire and explosions. But while filming Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part Two in the United Kingdom, Tom Cruise is reportedly causing a different kind of problem — his choppers are so loud they're disrupting other productions shooting nearby. NurPhoto | Getty Images Stalwart PBS series Call the Midwife — which stars Jenny Agutter as a nun named Sister Julienne and is set in the 1950s — is filming in the same area as Cruise's movie, and the actress and her costars have been forced into reshooting scenes due to the decidedly anachronistic sound of modern helicopters. Joking to the Mirror , Agutter reportedly said, "Tom Cruise keeps on ruining our filming by landing his helicopter right outside where we're shooting." When asked if she'd tell the action

India's Paytm slides over 10% to all-time low after lock-up period expires

Image
Shares of Paytm slid over 10% Tuesday to an all-time low of 476 Indian rupees ($5.8) before recovering slightly after the lock-up period for early backers of the Indian financial services firm ended last week. The lock-up period for the company’s earlier backers expired last week, freeing significant investors such as SoftBank Group and Alibaba to sell their shares. SoftBank sold shares worth over $200 million last week. At 476 Indian rupees, Paytm’s shares are down over 77% from the IPO price of 2,150 ($26.3). The company, which was valued at $16 billion in a private round in 2016, currently has the market cap of $3.8 billion. Paytm raised more than $6 billion across private rounds and IPO (including secondary transactions). Tech firms have lost significant value this year as the market takes a downturn and reverses much of the gains from the previous 13-year bull run. Paytm is among a number of Indian startups that went public last year. Zomato,

Leta, a Kenyan supply chain and logistics SaaS provider, raises $3M to scale in Africa

Image
Leta , a Kenyan B2B supply chain and logistics SaaS provider launched last year to optimize fleet management, is looking for growth opportunities in West Africa, even as it scales operations in its existing five markets. Leta’s proprietary route and load optimization technology is designed to boost efficiency in the delivery of goods to customers, and reduces the number of vehicles needed for distribution, leading to cost savings and increased competitiveness. In its expansion phase, backed by a $3 million pre-seed funding, the startup looks to tap some of the biggest distributors and e-commerce players in Ghana, and later Nigeria, to grow beyond Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe. The 4Di Capital, Chandaria Capital, Chui Ventures, PANI, Samurai Incubate, and Verdant Frontiers Fintech participated in the round. Cellulant co-founder Ken Njoroge, and Google executive Charles Murito made investments too. “Our next year is going to be fairly big for us. Our product h

Taktile raises $20M to help fintech companies test and deploy decision-making models

Image
The logic behind many fintech companies’ automated decisions — decisions that determine whether a customer is approved for a credit line, for example — is hard-coded into their app’s backend. This means that if a head of credit, for example, wants to make a change to the lending criteria, they have to raise a ticket with the IT department. To make changing this type of automated logic a more self-service process, Maximilian Eber and Maik Taro Wehmeyer founded Taktile in 2020. The two met while studying at Harvard and were both a part of the leadership team at QuantCo, a company building AI-powered apps for enterprise customers. While there, they found that many automated decisions were poorly designed, hardly ever tested properly and required a lot of engineering capacity — ultimately leading to guesswork. “Based on our experience, we decided to build a platform — Taktile — to empower experts, such as a head of risk, to design, evaluate and deploy decision flows on their o
